This website is essentially a sub set of the main Apache Site and it follows the same principle of open source collaborative approach to development of commercial grade programs. The sub domain and the development were established in the year 1999 as a part of the Apache Software Foundation.

xml.apache.org provides  XML support on a wide variety of platforms.  This project is managed as a cooperative effort amongst various individuals who are located all over the world and work either in their individual capacities or representing their employers. The Internet is the primary mode of communication used for development and planning for the development of XML software its documentation. The website lists a number of subproject which are essentially XML applications/components that deal with XML information sets.

Xml.apache.org projects are expected to avoid redundancy by working closely with other Apache projects.

  1. XML Commons - focused on common code and guidelines for XML projects
  2. AxKit – an XML-based web publishing script using mod_perl
  3. XML Security - Java and C++ implementations of the XML signature and encryption standards
  4. Xindice - a native XML database.
  5. Crimson - a Java XML parser. The parser is based fom the Sun Project X Parser. (in hibernation)
  6. Xang - Rapid development of dynamic server pages, in JavaScript (in hibernation)

The list in bold are active subprojects and the rest are in hibernation. Significant contributions to the XML user community include the following projects Axis, Batik Cocoon, Forrest, FOP, Santuario , SOAP ,Xalan , Xerces , XMLBeans XML-RPC.
