ASP Overview

ASP or Active Server Pages is a scripting language and Microsoft’s first server side complete script engine that can be used for generating interactive and dynamic web pages. Initially, it was marked as an add-on to the IIS but later it had been included as a freeware component after the release of Windows 2000 Server.

Today, using ASP to build interactive websites has become easy with the introduction of various built-in tools and objects. What are these objects? These objects can be referred as a group of various functionalities that are frequently used. For instance, in ASP 2.0 (the latest version available right now is 3.0), there are 6 built-in objects which are:

• Application
• Request
• Response
• Server
• ASPError
• Session

We shall discuss these in some detail in the coming sections. ASP pages are saved with an extension of .asp. One important thing to note down here is the difference between. Asp and .Aspx. Some people regard .aspx as an ASP .page which is not the case. A .aspx is an ASP.NET page which is another and much newer Microsoft’s server-side scripting language which is based on Microsoft’s .Net technology and ASP.

Another point to note down here is that VBScript is not the only Scripting engine that can be selected for ASP pages, you can select other Active Scripting Engines as well like Jscript etc.
