Your mobile office and your holiday

Your office holiday

So you are on an island to relax, rejuvenate, or just enjoy yourself. Everything goes on smoothly: the warm soothing breeze of the beach, the almost melodic hissing of banging leaves of some palm trees nearby, sipping that quench-thirsting piñacolada while getting yourself some sun-kissed tanning as you lay in the comfort of the beach bed. Okay you get the picture. Until, out of a sudden, a single moment snapped you out of your sweetest daydream—the thought of your family and loved ones just came across. An intensified feeling of getting connected to your loved ones proves just too much for you, sharing with them your worthwhile experiences and yet you are in the most remote place—almost uncharted.

Your office holiday

Relaxed work

Good thing, heaven-sent technology exists in the most needful circumstances.  The insatiable serendipity that mobile phones, laptops, and other wireless gadgets provide the consumers is life-changing. With the advent of the latest technology nowadays, the big round earth has shrunk into a small village, connecting almost all people around the globe.

What is more when you are in an islet holiday and your loved ones are miles away from you?

Wireless technology brings the miracle of combining business and pleasure both at the same time. With a laptop at hand, creating a winner presentation or doing the most precise auditing in a spreadsheet, while enjoying the mouth-watering grilled baby back ribs, are all impossible.  Plus, be updated with the latest news and happenings in your field by browsing any of the Web’s informative websites.

Likewise, connecting to your loved ones afar has never been this easy. Just an effortless touch of your fingertips to your mobile phone’s keypad is as easy as breathing to reach your loved ones. And if that’s just not enough, mobile phones also keep you updated with the latest events of your family and friends’ lives, thus skipping that solitary feeling.

So even if you are in a dream vacation in Barbados and that emotional longing suddenly pops out, all it takes is a single moment to hold on to your piñacolada in your left hand, and your wireless gadget on your right.

Mobility and your freedom

Nowadays, mobility means not just being able to quickly get to one’s intended destinations without too much inconvenience. Good vehicles and reliable transportation systems and physical infrastructure have now taken care of that. Rather, in this day and age, being mobile also involves continuing to be accessible from one’s home or office regardless of where one travels. It means staying in touch in real time and remaining instantly available by phone, instant messaging or email.

This would be a desirable state of affairs indeed—to be aware and informed, up to the minute, of goings-on at home or at the office even when one is hundreds of kilometers away. Yet, this scenario is not exactly remote anymore. Already, with the established availability of satellite phone and the advent of 3G telecommunications technology, this is in fact happening right now. One can use a satellite phone anywhere on earth—land, beach, sea or air, no matter how isolated or remote—and conduct a two-way conversation with someone as though both parties were in the same city. Furthermore, using the phone/data/fax modem of one’s laptop and with a roaming satellite Internet account, one could connect to the Internet through the phone and surf the Web and exchange instant messages with friends and relatives. Or, if the remote place is still within the operating radius of a local cell site, one could simply connect a USB radio-antenna WLAN (wide local area network) dongle and instantly access the Internet.

wireless anywhere

Your office as it would be if it were truly wireless

Where there is 3G mobile phone service available in the remote locality, one can directly connect to the Web using a 3G cellular phone. But since 3G is not yet widely available, one can instead tap into the Internet directly via satellite using a Ku-band VSAT (very small aperture terminal) satellite dish and connecting one’s laptop to it through a modem. This gives high-speed broadband access and more effectively facilitates communication with home base. One could even view one’s own office or home in real time if the proper Internet-connected surveillance system and IP cameras are in place.

Further enabling equipment for this, of course, will be a dependable power supply. The most convenient form would be a solar panel array and battery backup. One would also need a power inverter, which converts DC power from the solar panels and battery into AC for powering the laptop, satellite receiver or modem, lamps, and fans.

On the whole, this setup is no longer fantasy but a reality today. In fact, this is probably how things will be like and the way to go for mobility and connectivity in the near future.
