XML Egovernment

Website URL: http://www.xml.gov

This website belongs to the Egoverment Interest Group which collects and disseminates information on the US Government efforts in implementing XL initiatives within the US Government and their partners, such as vendors and contractors. If you are a vendor, partner or have an interest in the US Government efforts in the area of XML implementation then this site is for you.

An important aspect is that the business case has been suggested for the creation - maintenance of a registry/repository of XML usage, XML components by the US Government, its associates. It also addresses the need for the coordination and interoperability of Extensible Markup Language (XML) registry/repositories sponsored by federal agencies. The Group acknowledges that the extensible Markup Language (XML) has emerged as a key technology to assist commercial and government organizations in exchanging information and conducting business over the Internet.

Another important contribution is the evaluation and recommendation of StratML which is a schema used in strategic planning and vocabulary usage. The Strategic Markup Language (StratML) provides for the linking, referencing, sharing and analyzing the elements of strategic plans, goal, objective statements and more.

The StratML will also help in another important act namely enable agencies to be in compliance with the provisions of subsections 202(b)(4) & (5) and 207(d) of the eGov Act.  This subsection requires that Government agencies to work together to link their performance goals to key groups and other governments, as well as internal Federal Government operations. They also require that they adopt an open standard (e.g., StratML) which allows the organization and categorization of Government information so that it is searchable electronically and interoperates across agencies.

In a nutshell these are the deliverables that are expected:

  1. Develop Recommended Standards and Best practices for XML adoption and usage
  2. Develop Partnerships Organizations , Industries and key Groups that drive the development of XML Standards and Specifications
  3. Develop Partnerships with Existing Federal “Vertical” Communities to Accelerate the Delivery of XML Benefits
  4. Develop “Results-Oriented” Training and Education programmes and conduct Outreach programmes to encourage good XML practices
